Assistance system for reversing with trailers

TPAS Trailer Park Assist System (working title)

Based on the assistance system for reversing with trailers presented in 2017, Carit is developing a self-learning reversing assistance system for retrofitting to vehicles with rigid drawbar trailers with the company MRS Electronics Inc, Dayton, OH/ USA. The property rights of all development partners are held exclusively by Carit.

A reversing assistance system is being developed for parking trailers with rigid drawbars (e.g. horse and caravan trailers, but also trucks with semi-trailers), which can be retrofitted independently of the existing, manufacturer-specific on-board electronics.

A new feature is the display of the route and surroundings by means of a GPS module with simultaneous embedding of the images from the reversing cameras in order to show the current situation in the rearward direction of travel in real time.

Position changes are measured on the vehicle and trailer using high-precision 9-D sensors and reversing cameras, so that vehicle and trailer trajectories can be calculated continuously in near real time. The trajectories, the route and, above all, the driving instructions to the driver are continuously displayed on the smartphone. By superimposing a satellite image, areas can be marked on the smartphone as impassable obstacles simply by touching them, which automatically recalculates the ideal route.

Important information, such as when a critical articulation angle is reached, above which the vehicle can no longer straighten the trailer when reversing, is announced in advance. A second person is no longer required to guide the trailer thanks to the reversing camera mounted on the trailer.

Reversing assistance systems with a camera on the towing vehicle with calculation of trajectories via articulation angle (from camera image or articulation angle sensor) and steering angle (OBD/CAN) of the vehicle are well known in practice. Obstacles behind the trailer and the positions for changing direction are not recognizable, which usually requires a guide.
