Carit Automotive GmbH & Co KG is a member of the Light Vehicles & Micromobility working group of the German eMobility Association (BEM). The BEM is committed to the long-term goal of converting mobility in Germany to electromobility with the use of renewable energies. This objective is based on the German government’s plan to become the lead market and lead provider for electromobility. The BEM’s tasks include improving the legal framework for the expansion of electromobility as a sustainable and forward-looking mobility concept and ensuring equal opportunities in the transition to electromobility. In order to achieve these goals, the BEM networks stakeholders from business, politics and the media, promotes public awareness of electromobility and advocates the necessary infrastructural changes. In view of a changing society that recognizes its social and ecological responsibility, the BEM wants to integrate the fascination for electromobility into people’s everyday lives and implement it through practical experience.

Since the introduction of the current emission level 4, mobile machinery with large diesel engines must comply with significantly stricter limit values for nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Compliance with the limit values is conventionally determined on the engine test bench in corresponding test cycles. The question is whether the required emission reductions are also complied with when the machine is actually in use. The measurement technology established outside of laboratories to verify even low pollutant emissions is controversial. One point that should not be neglected is the cross-sensitivity of the sensors to exhaust gas components such as ammonia. Cross-sensitivities can falsify measurements of nitrogen oxide emissions. Ammonia is required in modern exhaust gas aftertreatment systems with SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce nitrogen oxides at the catalytic converter and is added to the exhaust gas in the form of an aqueous urea solution (AdBlue®).

The legal and political goals of achieving lower pollutant emissions are associated with major challenges that can only be overcome through interdisciplinary cooperation, e.g. in the area of research and development.

This is why research institutions and innovative companies with various areas of expertise have joined forces in the NOx-Arbeitsmobil network. By pooling their expertise, they want to develop an innovative range of products and services for mobile machinery based on a new type of NOx sensor principle and make a significant contribution to a cleaner environment.

The Institute for Light Electric Drives and Generators(www.ileag.de) is responsible for managing the “NOx-Arbeitsmobil” network as part of the ZIM program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

Heavy rainfall, flooding, dry spells, heatwaves – the climate in North Rhine-Westphalia is already changing noticeably. In order to limit the further increase in global warming, we must do everything we can to become climate-neutral as quickly as possible. As one of the strongest economic regions in Europe, NRW has a special responsibility in this regard. NRW therefore wants to be climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. This goal presents Germany’s most populous federal state with enormous challenges that society, politics, business and science must tackle together. As an industrialized state, the transition to climate neutrality represents a special effort. In order to tackle this task, the state has repositioned its support for the implementation of climate protection and energy transition measures for the future with the establishment of NRW.Energy4Climate. The aim is to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time strengthen North Rhine-Westphalia as a location for industry and services for the future. With the self-image of a central driver, NRW.Energy4Climate is pooling all forces and resources in the four sectors with the highest emissions – the energy sector, industry, buildings and transport – which together are responsible for more than 90 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in NRW. The transformation is to be accelerated across all sectors at
so that North Rhine-Westphalia can achieve the goal of climate neutrality as quickly as possible.

We cannot do all this alone. To accomplish this task of the century, we need the action and support of everyone. We are convinced that the future can only work together. It is now up to all of us to reduce emissions so that they are in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. We don’t have much time left to do this. So let’s set the pace together and show what opportunities the transformation offers!
